Abstract

Competitive Fitness Challenge uses sex-specific prescribed loads within a standardized six-station circuit, creating an unusual model for examining whether competition design attenuates sex differences in repetition-based performance. The purpose of this study was to characterize sex-specific performance patterns across multiple international competition seasons and to determine whether male-female output relationships differed between competitive standards and exercise stations. A retrospective repeated cross-sectional analysis was conducted using official International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness competition results from 2021 to 2026. The primary longitudinal analysis examined senior Gold and Silver winning scores, while detailed station-level analyses used complete recent European Championship datasets. Female-to-male performance ratios were calculated for total scores and individual stations. Across the observation period, total-score sex differences narrowed substantially compared with the inaugural season, particularly at Silver level. In recent competitions, mean total output was nearly equivalent between men and women, despite clear station-specific differences. Upper-body bodyweight pulling and pressing stations generally retained a male advantage, whereas several externally loaded lower-body and whole-body stations produced female repetition outputs comparable with or greater than male outputs under the sex-specific load prescriptions. These findings indicate that total-score parity can coexist with distinct sex-specific performance profiles at the station level. The study suggests that standardized sex-specific loading can attenuate differences in aggregate competitive output without eliminating task-specific physiological and mechanical differences. The results provide an initial evidence base for future load calibration, athlete profiling, competition design, and sex-specific training research in Fitness Challenge.
